Flexstone VS Duradek: What's The Difference?

Flexstone VS Duradek: What's The Difference?

Choosing a durable and waterproof deck coating product for your home can be daunting. Fortunately, some excellent options are available, and two of the most popular are Flexstone and Duradek. Both products have become popular in the last decade to cover decks and other exterior surfaces. You might be wondering what the differences are and which is the superior deck coating product. In this article, we will explore what makes each product unique, how they differ, and how they stack up against one another! Read on to learn more!

Flexstone is a polyaspartic coating, while Duradek is a vinyl membrane coating. Both products offer excellent exterior surface solutions. The first thing we want to point out is that both Flexstone and Duradek are waterproof. They're also durable, long-lasting and UV resistant. Both products are slip-resistant underfoot and easy to apply. However, Flexstone has better slip resistance in all seasons, including winter. Flexstone was designed to be used in cold Canadian climates and holds up better in extreme temperatures. The main difference between these two products is that Flexstone has a more specialized design for outdoor use, while Duradek is more of an all-purpose flooring solution. Both products are made with high-quality materials and will last for years, but Flexstone tends to last longer!

Flexstone is a polyaspartic coating system, while Duradek is a PVC-based vinyl product. Polyaspartic coating is a superior alternative to the more common PVC-based coatings applied over concrete, wood or steel. Polyaspartics offer extreme durability and protection against the elements. Polyaspartic coatings have been proven to last up to 5 times longer than most other materials in harsh conditions, including salt spray testing and accelerated UV testing (which simulates years of exposure). The durability of polyaspartics is due to their chemical structure and unique ability to bond with substrates such as concrete or masonry without any primer needed! Vinyl coatings have some disadvantages, such as being more slippery when wet (especially in the winter) or susceptible to cracking/fracturing under high-impact situations like extreme weather conditions or heavy foot traffic areas.

Polyaspartic coatings are used mainly for exterior surfaces and provide superior durability, flexibility and waterproofing. Compared to vinyl membranes, Polyaspartic is more durable (6-10 years) than vinyl membranes (4-5 years). This is because polyaspartic coatings do not require a primer on the surface before application. Polyaspartic coatings can be applied on new or existing surfaces and will not peel off like other products. Polyaspartic coatings like Flexstone have a seamless design that allows easy cleaning and creates a water-tight seal. Vinyl deck coatings like Duradek have seams which can be an issue for water tightness, especially if you're using it outdoors.

Both Flexstone and Duradek are highly durable, long-lasting deck coating options. As you can see, they have many similarities, but for us, Flexstone comes out on top. Flexstone has more benefits and is more durable, weather-resistant and waterproof than vinyl deck coating options such as Duradek. Flexstone also boats superior UV resistance. Flexstone has an added UV inhibitor to help combat the degradation process, making it more durable and longer-lasting than Duradek. At Pro Surfaces, we use Flexstone products because they are superior. Flexstone holds up better in all weather conditions, from extreme heat to extreme cold.
